I remember publishing my first ever blog post on a cold January day in 2018. I had been thinking about it for a couple of months, and finally decided to take the plunge. I initially considered calling myself Mom AAA+ : with a positive outlook—a clever suggestion from my banker brother-in-law, a smart play on credit ratings and my finance background. The triple A of course are my sons, Arnav, Abeer and Anvay. But ultimately, chose TripleAMommy for better readability.
I had never really imagined writing anything beyond official reports and emails, but just as my life changed completely one day, so did my reason for writing. 2017, was a year of struggle. My twins were born prematurely in December 2016, and those early months were grueling. Even with my parents by my side, exhaustion clung to me. Every two hours, I would wake up to spoon-feed them just 5 ml of milk each, willing their tiny bodies to grow. When I returned to work three months later, waves of exhaustion would keep washing over me. A doctor’s visit revealed my vitamin D levels were dangerously low—a consequence of months spent indoors, first working from home, then navigating pre-term newborn chaos.
And then, Anvay’s diagnosis. The moment that changed everything. For all of us. Something had felt off, but nothing prepares you for hearing those words. Shock. Grief. Falling in a bottomless pit, the ground pulled beneath my feet. A haze of medical appointments, unanswered questions, and a future I couldn’t yet fathom.
With no clear answers from doctors, I turned to the internet—not just for medical explanations, but for stories. From parents like me. For someone who could tell me how to survive this.
I found a lot of voices on the internet. Voices that shared their experiences, their hopes, their fears, their wins. I cried with them, hoped with them, prayed with them. But I also saw that most of these voices were from the West, where both the medical realities as well as the family context were very different from ours. So, I decided to blog. To share our lives, to send out my words in the universe (the internet), hoping that they will be found by someone who needed them that moment, that day.
And that’s where this blog began. And took a life of its own.
Writing, and Finding Myself Along the Way
Once I started to write, I found that I had a lot to say! I wrote not only about our lives, Anvay’s condition but also about things close to my heart. I wrote about disability inclusion, parenting, about gender, about mental health. I chronicled stories of inspiring women, reflected on societal norms, and sometimes, simply captured fleeting moments of joy, struggle, and change.
Writing was cathartic. More than once, I have poured my emotions into my words – grief, hope, love. And every time it left me lighter. Sometimes, I wrote to make sense of my own thoughts. Other times, I wrote because I needed to be heard. And often when the readers shared their own experiences, my own emotions and feelings got validated.
Writing was discovery. Writing was introspection. Often when I think of a topic to write on, I mull it over in my head for a couple of days, turning thoughts around, forming sentences and paragraphs. More than once I have started with almost the whole blog post in my mind. But when I actually started to write, it was as if the mind took a direction of its own – while the start would be as I planned, what finally ended up coming out, could be very different from what I had originally imagined!
Writing has been a journey. Over the years, my blog has become a chronicle of my life—a living, breathing reflection of my journey. Those who have been reading my posts regularly will have walked with me through my ups and downs, witnessed my growth, and maybe even found echoes of their own stories in mine.
Crossing Milestones, Celebrating the Unexpected
Just like I did not know the final shape my blog would take when I started writing it, I did not know where my blogging journey would take me when I started 7 years ago.
Earlier this year, just around the 7th anniversary of my blog, I crossed 100,000 views! Not a very big number, considering some of my posts on platforms such as Momspresso, garnered hundreds of thousands of views just on their own. But given my limited audience and barely any promotion, to me this is a big number and a milestone to celebrate.
As I wrote, I tried to find different ways to reach my audience. I found and joined many groups on Facebook. I found communities of bloggers, who read and supported each other. I learnt about the concept of a blog hop – where a number of bloggers come together to write on a theme (usually) and then read, shared and commented on each other’s blogs.
I found communities like Blogchatter and platforms such as Momspresso, where I published my blogs. It was heartening to see the response on some of my posts published on Momspresso – their wide outreach meant that my words could reach lakhs of people. Blogchatter took me to completely uncharted territories – I took the challenge of writing a post every day of April in 2020 (A2Z challenge) and ended up publishing those posts as a book! Who had thought that I will ever have a book to my name!! Do check it out here! Another achievement was winning the orange flower award in 2021, hosted by Women’s Web.
Finally in 2022, I decided to host my own blog hop. I started with one on gender in March 2022 and then in December 2022, I did my first every disability inclusion blog hop to commemorate the International Day of Person’s with Disability. It was great to have around 30 bloggers and in 2024, I hosted my 3rd IDPD blog hop.
Not only did this widen my horizon, it introduced to me to a whole different community of people – and I am so grateful for that.
But it is not easy. You need purpose and you need passion.
Consistency is key to establishing oneself in any area. Same goes for establishing an online presence. The first is to write regularly, consistently. And of course it means good quality content as well, if you want to continue to keep your readers engaged. And secondly, you need to be consistent on promoting yourself on social media – if you want followers and a loya audience.
Add to this a full-time job (with a lot of travel), 3 kids (partial single parenting) and managing a household – you get the drift. Time becomes a rare commodity.
So how does one manage? Often, it is easy to start something, and you can carry along for some time buoyed by initial encouragement and success, but to keep at it for years to come, is not easy. You need sustenance fuel to keep going.
This is where purpose and passion step in. This blog has served a deep-seated need in me –to make a difference in people’s lives – however small. It has given me a platform to reach out to people and connect.
Feedback from my readers – you – has kept me going. When someone says, this is exactly what they needed to read today, my purpose is fulfilled. And this continues to feed my passion to write.
I know I probably will never have enough time to regularly post on social media or make my posts SEO friendly or do all the right hash tags to reach a wider audience, but I try whenever I can.
But I do know that I will continue to write, so that my words will reach someone somewhere who needed them that day.
So please keep reading, keep giving me feedback!
